Isak Dinesen's Babette's Feast warms the belly and the soul.
French chef Babette leaves behind the French Civil War and arrives in an austere little village in Denmark. There she resides with two sisters who are devoutly religious. She proceeds to hit a little lottery and decides to spend all the money on one great feast.
The meal is attended by not only the peasants of the village but also by a Danish general who years before had been unable to keep wooing one of the sisters because of her religious views. The peasants of the village vow to eat but not enjoy the meal thinking it would be against God's will.
