Rounders

Matt Damon, Edward Norton, and John Turturro star in Rounders. In Rounders Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) plays a texas hold'em player/law student who makes his money by grinding it out at small clubs. That is until he loses his entire stake of $30,000 to Russian mobster Teddy KGB (John Malkovich). He gives it up for awhile only to return at the repeated requests of his buddy Worm (Norton) who has just recently been released from prison.

Rounders is an interesting character study about the turns your life can take depending on the choices you make. Not only about who you surround yourself with and take advice from but also if you are willing to listen to yourself.

I've seen this movie dozens of times. In that respect it is a little like Texas hold'em - addicting. Enjoy but be careful, because before you know it you're all in...

Memorable Quotes

Mike McDermott: Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker.

Mike McDermott: You were lookin' for that third three, but you forgot that Professor Green folded on Fourth Street and now you're representing that you have it. The DA made his two pair, but he knows they're no good. Judge Kaplan was trying to squeeze out a diamond flush but he came up short and Mr. Eisen is futilely hoping that his queens are going to stand up. So like I said, the Dean's bet is $20.

Victory

John Huston directs this 1981 film about a soccer match between Allied prisoners and the Germans. Michael Caine, a former British soccer star leads the Allied squad in this improbable yet highly entertaining match.

Victory features an all-star cast of both actors and athletes with the likes of Caine, Max Von Sydow, Sylvester Stallone (as the goalie), and even Pele.

The game symbolizes freedom for the allies. It is their emotional outlet and it is one they pour themselves into both during practice and when the game itself begins. There comes a time though when they are forced to make a choice to give up the game for a seemingly easy out. Do they take the easy out or do they play for victory? Watch Victory to find out.
